H ON THE RUMOURED STEPS SPLIT AND WHY POP HAS GONE MAD

He's the clown prince of Pop according to Smash Hits readers, and to Steps fans, H is simply king. The perkiest peeps in chartsville are back with a new double-A single Here & Now / You'll Be Sorry, on Monday, but H is here with club today. Clearing up the rumours of a split, revealing all about the Greatest Hits alb and his view on Billie & Chris Evens, It's over to Mr Watkins ....

Trips to Asia, America, Oz and Japan have been helping Steps build up quite a passport stamp collection. "They're Steps bonkers in Japan" reveals H. "We saw same beautiful sights there, such as temples and the world trade centre." But now you're home! "Yes, it's hard work but I wake up everyday and thank everybody. I love what I do and I appreciate it."

When fans voted Here & Now and You'll Be Sorry as their fave tracks from Buzz, it helped Steps pick their new single. "We said, 'Let's release them both'," reveals H. "It's a double whammy. I take lead on You'll Be Sorry so it's a boys vocal, which hasn't happened very often but is very nice." The tunes are the final ones to be lifted for the fivesome's third alb.

Now they've had the hits, done solo projects (albeit not in singing), seems everyone's ready to resign Steps to the bargin bin of splitstown. "We're not splitting up so don't worry" H assures Club. "We've got the Greatest Hits out this year and there will be another album after that." Yippie! And treats on the GH? "We're covering Diana Ross's Chain Reaction," H reveals. Yowsers, Choooooon.

After being out of the country for a bit, Steps took a while to catch up on pop goss. But news of H's pal Billie getting married didn't hit him too hard. " I went to her 18th Birthday party last September and that was one of the last times I saw her," he says. "As long as they're both happy, I think age has nothing to do with it. Good on 'em. Don't worry what anybody else thinks, I say."

Just cos you are part of a tip-top pop combo doesn't mean you hold the key to knowledge of what people will like, admits H Steps. "Pop is up the wall at this minute" he says "I just think it's really important for us to keep being different and doing things in our own way rather than following suit. Whatever happens, we'll keep doing what we do best." Glad to hear it mate!

Funniest recent moment?
"We left Faye in a burger bar in America! She went off to the toilet and we didn't realise and drove off!"
Hosting SM:TV ....
"I love doing stuff with Cat. As long as you're focused and know what you're doing, live TV is fine. I want to do new TV shows with Claire, maybe not just Steps To The Stars"
(Teletext)

JASPER IS THE O.N.E FOR FAYE

The smart money was on those canny lads Ant n Dec. Theyd obviously studied the form book as LEE from STEPS and Jonathan Wilkes had nearly become professional footballers and theyd both ended up on their side. If that wasnt enough theyd also roped in former England hero Peter Beardsley.

The girls werent being left out with four teams taking part in their own mini-tournament , but the only representatives from planet pop were LISA and FAYE from STEPS. Emma Bunton was on the pitch, but only in her role as Jade Damages official No.1 fan.

FAYE also showed her support for her partner Jasper, leaping on to the stage to sing a song with his band O.N.E -and jolly entertaining it was too. (No, it does NOT mean that shes thinking of leaving STEPS).

FAYE AND JASPER ON STAGE

STEPS TOUR IN 2002 TOO

STEPS will be heading out on the road again in Spring 2002!
LISA and FAYE told Radio 1 that the band hope to be on tour twice in 2002 meaning there will probably be Christmas dates as well!

40,000 TICKETS SOLD IN TWO DAYS

STEPS managed to shift an amazing 40,000 concert tickets for their Gold Tour 2001 in just two days! Keep an eye out for more dates being announced soon!

FLASHER IN THE BAND

LISA SCOTT-LEE has revealed her STEPS bandmate H's most annoying habit...and it's not his singing.
Seems H - real name IAN WATKINS - cannot resist whipping out his manhood at every available opportunity.
"Oh, H is always getting it out," LISA says.
Explains why they did a cover version of TRAGEDY.
(Sunday Mirror)

STEPS SUPPORT MENCAP

Pop band STEPS lent their support to Mencap for National Learning Disability Week, June 17-23. The week aims to highlight the choices available to people with a learning diability. It's a charity close to Lisa's heart - she has two uncles with learning disabilities.

H PREPARES FOR A CHAIN REACTION

Everyone's favourite Step, H, looks back on four years in the group and exclusively reveals their next release. And it's gonna be a good one!

Jeremy: I know what your next single is but I don't know if it's a secret.
H: I don't think it's a huge secret. We haven't announced it officially but maybe we should have the honour of doing that now!

Jeremy: OK then, what is the next single?
H: The first new single to be released from our forthcoming greatest hits album will be a cover version of Chain Reaction!

Jeremy: So will you be wearing a silver sequin frock in the video?
H: Not silver, ruby red for me! In true Diana style.

Jeremy: How different is it from the Diana Ross version?
H: To be honest with you we recorded vocals about a month back and tomorrow we're listening to the final version, so actually you know as much as me. I'll keep you posted.

Jeremy: We all know Steps aren't splitting up but why are you doing a greatest hits now when that fuels the rumours more?
H: I think we've just been incredibly successful. We've been around for four years and every single that we've released, thank God, has done incredibly well so it's really a kind of thank you. It's also the ultimate pop album! It's the end of the first chapter and onto the next.

Jeremy: A lot of the success of Steps is down to the dance mixes that get played in the clubs. Have you thought about releasing a dance mix album?
H: It's funny you saying that, I was actually thinking about that yesterday because I was sifting through my record collection and spotted my Kylie remixes. And I thought it would be really cool to do something like that.

Jeremy: I've noticed that on a lot more Steps songs now you're taking lead vocal, why's that?
H: I don't know the reason but whatever it is, it's quite nice really. Rather than being a backing dancer I get to earn my money a bit! It's very nice to listen to the girls but it's nice to partake as well.

Jeremy: Do you socialise with any of the other Steps?
H: It depends what I'm doing. If I'm going out, I'll maybe go with Lisa or if I want some down time I'll go shopping in Bond Street with Claire. She's good at spending money is Claire!

Jeremy: If I could give you three wishes, one a selfish wish for you and you alone, one a wish for your career and one a wish for the world, what would they be?
H: Super selfish wish, I want to look like Brad Pitt. Would I pay for plastic surgery? Why not? I haven't yet though! For my career I wish longevity. I'd love to do a collaboration and I've been offered a lot of musical theatre so I'd like to tread the boards and dabble in that area. And the wish for the world... Well, I'm sick of people who tan because I don't tan so I wish that everybody who tans would go green! I'd like to invent a tanning tablet so I wouldn't look like a carrot, I'd look golden brown.

HERE AND NOW IS THE TIME TO BUY THE NEW SINGLE

STEPS latest single, HERE AND NOW/YOU'LL BE SORRY, was released today! And we have to say it is one of the most amazing CD packages the band have come up with!
Both CDs and the casette are packed with absolutely fantastic remixes of two of the greatest tracks STEPS have ever released and as if that wasn't enough we get treated to a superb group version of LISA's tour solo, JUST LIKE THE FIRST TIME, which has recieved cult status from STEPS fans all over the world!
Make sure that you buy both CDs and the cassette as the remixes on the cassette are different to those on the CDs!
It truly deserves to go to No.1 and should be the smash hit of 2001!

Woolworths are predicting that the single will enter at No.8, but it is the Box's single of the week and it is heavily tipped to go to No.1. We'll keep you informed of it's progress in the charts as the week goes on.

STEPS SLAM 5IVE 'IDIOTS'

LEE from STEPS has launched an attack on two of the members of 5ive - but he refuses to name names.
Talking about the biggest egos in pop, the singer tells next week's Top Of The Pops Magazine: "A few months ago, every time we bumped into 5ive they had an attitude. We never really said anything to offend them, I think they just wanted this bad-boy image and it all got out of hand.
"Ritchie is a good friend of mine, but it's a shame that one of the band can be such a great mate and two of the band might be acting like idiots. And no, I'm not saying who."
(The Mirror)

SINGLE SALES TOO LOW FOR TOP SPOT

After two days of sales STEPS look set to miss out on the coverted No.1 spot.
Shaggy looks like retaining the top spot on this week's worldpop-sponsored UK singles chart according to midweek sales figures. Shaggy's track Angel has held off the challenges of STEPS and Faithless.
STEPS'new double A-side HERE AND NOW/YOU'LL BE SORRY is a new Top 5 entry together with Faithless' We Come 1. R&B siblings Brandy & Ray J enter the Top 10 with their new single, a cover of Phil Collins' Another Day In Paradise. Meanwhile there are also new Top 10 entries for dance duo Basement Jaxx with Romeo, indie heroes Muse with Newborn and former Wet Wet Wet frontman Marti Pellow with his debut solo single, Close To You.
Spice Girl Mel B is a disappointly low entry in the nether reaches of the Top 20 with her new single, Lullaby. DJ Boris Dlugosch together with Moloko's Roisin Murphy is a new Top 20 entry with Never Enough while Sheffield dance duo I Monster enter the Top 20 with their debut single, Daydream In Blue.

STEPS MOVIE RUMOURS DENIED

The rumour that STEPS are palnning to hit the big screen with a Spice World style flick have been denied by the bands management and record company:

After conquering the charts with their ace pop tunes, STEPS are heading for the States to screen test for movie roles. The five will be trying out in front of the camera individually as well as a group.

The Truth: There are no immediate plans to get back to the US, says STEPS' press fella. But it is something they've been thinking about and will be "developed". The summer will be spent in the UK doing outdoor shows.

FAYE GETS A ROASTING

FAYE from STEPS takes the stage to face a traditional Sunday Plus roasting from the ever inquisitive Josie....

Josie: Christina or Britney?
Faye: Britney...or Christinas hair.

Josie: One For Sorrow or Loves Got A Hold Of Your Heart?
Faye: 'One For Sorrow

Josie: Geri, toned or skinny?
Faye: Geri, toned or skinny?...both!

Josie: In one year will you be solo or part of a group?
Faye: Hopefully part of a group.

Josie: A night in, or a night out?
Faye: No question...night out!

Josie: Dreadlocks or a blow-wave?
Faye: Are you taking the mickey? Depends on what day it is.

Josie: Will you be a bridesmaid at Lisas wedding?
Faye: If she asks me, yes please!

Josie: Will you be having a joint wedding with Lisa?
Faye: I think mine is coming first.

Josie: Glossy magazine photoshoot or a private affair?
Faye: Private affair. But you cant help having photos.

Faye, you have been roasted!

SATURDAY MEANS H DAY!

Saturday will definately be meaning H day..well for the next two weeks at least!
H did such a great job of stepping into Ant and Dec's shoes on Saturday morning kids shows sm:tv and CD:UK that he'll be back on Saturday 9th June and Saturday 16th June to help the lovely Cat and Louise out again!
Expect even more fun and laughs than usual as the most hyperactive man on planet pop shows wakes us all up with a kick start.
STEPS will be on this weeks show to offer a little moral support to H and to perform their new single, but next week he'll be on his own so make sure we all offer our support and don't miss a minute of the fun!

CHART NEWS

STEPS are currently at No.3 in the mid week sales figures. They could possibly go even higher as STEPS always sell a lot of singles on a Saturday.

It's very likely that there will be more new dates for the Gold Tour announced this week, so keep checking back as we'll let you know first!

PARK SNUB FOR STEPS

STEPS have been snubbed by organisers of next month's Party In The Park for being too "lightweight."
LEE, H, FAYE, CLAIRE and LISA were told they are too poppy for the July 8 bash in London's Hyde Park.
An event insider said: "They don't fit in with what we want. We feel that Steps are past their sell-by date.
"They were really keen to do it but the line-up is very strong and they are too poppy and lightweight."
Seems odd to say they're too poppy for a show featuring Hear'Say and Ronan Keating. Not exactly the Monsters Of Rock festival, is it?
(The Sun)

My advice to people who have purchased tickets for Party In The Park just to see STEPS is to get in touch with the ticket provider and see if you can get a refund!

STEPPY STUFF

STEPS go wild in this month's issue of Top Of The Pops magazine in a special 16 page poster mag in which the band get sized down and chased by wild animals!! The mini mag also folds out into a huge poster so go and get your copy now!

SEXY STEP TOO FAR FOR GIRLS

The Gorgeous girls from chart toppers STEPS have been offered £1MILLION each to star in a porn film.In what is thought to be the highest fee ever offered in the history of hard-core, the tasty trio were also promised a percentage of the profits.Last night sex industry sources said a film featuring LISA SCOTT-LEE, FAYE TOZER and CLAIRE RICHARDS, would make tens of millions worldwide. But the girls refused. The band, whose line-up also includes IAN WATKINS (H) and LEE LATCHFORD-EVANS, have a huge foreign following after notching up 29 No1 hits in 16 countries. And far from being prudes, the trio have already revealed their love of hard-core, admitting surfing blue movie channels in their hotel rooms when they are away on tour! But they say they only ogle the free previews 'cos they don't want it to show up on their hotel bills. LISA said: "The knack is to flick through the previews quickly. I dont want charges on my bill for porn viewing!"Crafty blonde FAYE added: "Yeah i do it, too. Anyone who says they don't have a crafty look is lying." The stunners also told Channel 4's The Priory they'd been offerd "hundreds of thousands" to strip nude for a top-shelf mag. But LISA said they turned it down.

NEW RELEASE FOR THE NETHERLANDS

STEPS next release in the Netherlands will be Here And Now. It is expected that promos of the CD will be in radio stations early next month.
As we reported a few weeks back Here And Now will also be the next release in Asia and will be teamed as a double A side with Summer Of Love.
If we are to expect a trend here then it is highly probabal that the next single in the US will be Here And Now as well!

BACKSTAGE BLUES

STEPS were in the wars this morning. FAYE told us she was feeling poorly, while CLAIRE was limping as a result of just too much dancing. It's a good thing this was their last morning down at cd:uk before they have a bit of a break. Not that they'll be off for long though. The quintet are hard at work recording new tracks for their greatest hits album which is out this September, not to mention planning the video for their next single Chain Reaction.
(Worldpop)

FAYE ROCKS

FAYE TOZER has recorded a new track with her fiancé Jasper Irn - but insists it doesn't mean STEPS will split. FAYE supplied the backing vocals for the new track by Jasper's Danish rock band O.N.E.
(Heat magazine)

LISA LOVES JOHNNY

Ain't love grand? LISA from STEPS couldn't resist grabbing hold of her fiancé Johnny Shentall for a quick snog. The couple didn't mind showing anyone in Leicester Square, London, just how much they love each other. STEPS had been recording a TV show and Johnny popped along so he could spend some time with his lady. What a gent.

FAYE WOULDN'T BURST BUBBLE

FAYE has been giving her opinion on Channel 4's brilliant fly on the wall show Big Brother 2, in which 10 housemates stay isolated from the rest of the world for ten weeks. The housemates must nominate each other each week and battle it out against each other in phone polls judged by the general public.
FAYE says "I love Big Brother I'd watch it all day if I could, I'm a real gossip and extremely nosey so this is my ideal TV show! My favourite is Bubble but I quite like Penny as well because she's barking mad!"
For more info on the housemates that FAYE is talking about visit www.channel4.com/bigbrother/

SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER FOR STEPS

A few months ago we told you about how STEPS had filmed a new show for ITV called 70's Mania. Well the good news is it's on this Saturday! STEPS joined other pop acts including Hear'Say to perform classic 70's hits, just like the ABBA Mania and the Mowtown Mania shows that they have previously appeared on.
STEPS will be perfoming their 1999 No.1 smash hit single Tragedy and will take the stage wearing matching white suits and black shirts, all in the style of the 70's film Saturday Night Fever!
It's not to be missed so make sure you tune in at 8.45pm on ITV this Saturday.

FAYE SPEAKS OUT FOR POPSTARS

Is pop about to loose it's grip on the charts?! FAYE thinks not!
"I think there will always be people who try to make out that pop is somehow less importnat than other music. But when you've got bands like STEPS, S Club 7 and A1 having No.1 singles and big selling albums, not to mention massive sell out tours, then pop is doing pretty well thankyou!"
Well said Faye!

STEPPY STUFF

The new issue of Smash Hits is out now and includes a double page interview with the STEPS ladies in which they all get extremely fruity and chat about getting naked, wet t-shirt competitions and mooning from the tour bus! There's also a fab free poster of LEE, looking his usual handsome self.

Also if you're attending the STEPS fan day at Lego Land here's some more info on it for you..

"Please ignore all the rumours as to whether or not STEPS will be at legoland,
it was never my intention for STEPS to be there, but I can tell you that Jan
telephoned me at home to say LISA is going to tell the rest of the gang about
it and that both Jan and LISA will do their best to be there. LISA has
already got me 25 T shirts to give away and she has promised to sign everyone
before she sends them to me. Lisa has also said that she will also get me
some more signed photo cards as well.

If you haven't got your tickets yet please let me know if you want to buy

sold out.

moment the leaders are Here and Now followed by Deeper Shade Of Blue and then

CD:UK CHART NEWS

According today's edition of CD:UK, STEPS have dropped out of the top 10 with their latest single, Here And Now/You'll Be Sorry, let's hope that in tomorrows chart they've managed to hang on in there!

H - THE MAN OF MANY TALENTS

We'd just like to say a big well done to H for the brilliant job he's done in stepping into Ant and Dec's shoes and taking over sm:tv and CD:UK. He's certainly brightened up all our of our mornings and we're sure there's a future in presenting as well as singing for the most hyperactive man in pop!
He's certainly impressed fellow presenter Louise who claims that H is the nicest famous person she's ever met (except Liverpool Player hubbie Jamie Redknapp that is!)
And Hear'Say were pretty impressed too saying that STEPS are the nicest people they've met since they've become famous!
Unfortunately Ant and Dec are back next week so that's the last we'll be seeing of H's presenting skills for a bit, but he and the rest of STEPS will be joing Hear'Say on 70's Mania tonight on ITV so make sure you tune in!

17.06.01

NUMBER 13 UNLUCKY FOR SOME

STEPS have dropped 9 places in this weeks UK charts! Their brilliant double A side single Here And Now/You'll Be Sorry entered the charts last sunday at No.4, but this week it has plummeted out of the top 10 to No.13. It has dashed hopes of the band gaining their third UK No.1 single with the track.

SEVENTIES MANIA - MORE OF A TRAGEDY

ITVS Seventies Mania threatens to end several careers.
Stephen Gately, who made the mistake of singing.
Pans People, who made the mistake of dancing.
And Donny Osmond, who made the mistake of trying to give Kym from HearSay a piggyback.
A shame. Because Donny deserved better, even if he did throw us a curve ball at the start of the show.
According to our host, Seventies Mania was: Some of the finest songs of the 1970s sung by the stars of today. Including... Brotherhood of Man, Dana and David Essex.
But you can only sympathise with a guy who has to break off an interview with two former members of the Please Sir cast to announce: One of my favourite bands of the 1970s was Earth Wind and Fire. So please welcome...Damage.
TVs overcrowded 70s and 80s nostalgia market has been heading for a nasty crash for months.
And this was it.
Having not-so-cunningly spotted the success of Top Ten and I Love The 1970s, ITV created a Saturday-night show almost as bad as BBC1s Joy Of Text.
Bottom of the barrel was scraped when Donny met the two Please Sir actors. With both pushing retirement, Donny asked: What was it like to grow up in the 1970s?
This degenerated into a discussion about Cockney rhyming slang. What does Brad Pitt mean? said Donny, standing in a huge dollop of the answer.
He also tempted fate by demanding to know what Donny O could stand for in Cockney. Career low? Gi-ro? Ratings blow?
Then there were the guests.
Donny seemed particularly thrilled to have Brotherhood of Mans original line-up Terry Venables, Judith Hann, Mr Bean and a dinner lady.
My childhood hero David Essex sorry, but its true nearly retrieved things with an inspired Hold Me Close Dont Let Me Go.
But then Stephen Gately, for whom the mid-70s means his midweek chart position gave us the myxomatosis mix of Bright Eyes and STEPS gave us TRAGEDY.
Interspersed with the music and chat was newsreel of 1970s events, including Concordes maiden flight in 1969.
It was all lapped up by a demented audience, which included those whod deliberately dressed in 70s clothes, those whod accidentally dressed in 70s clothes and what I thought was the cast of Tenko but turned out to be Pans People.
Special guests HearSays song asked, When Will I See You Again? My guess was in about 15 years when theyre on I Love 2001.
But they reappeared for the YMCA finale, at which point Kym decided to mount the host.
I can only wish Donny a speedier recovery than the show.
(Ally Ross - The News Of The World)

5. Never Get Over You
6. Hand On Your Heart

STEPS GO LIVE AND LOUD

The main problem that people reviewing STEPS' performance at Sunday's Live And Loud concert, in Glasgow, is that although the band were definately loud they were also definately not live.
The problem with this being that alot of bands there, such as Hear'Say performed some of their tracks live. Personally it doesn't bother me if a band sing live or mime and in my opinion STEPS have such a huge stage presence and command the audience in such a way that the atmosphere of just being their company as they strut their stuff is more than enough to make a great evening out!
Anyway I've had my little say so let's see what music mag NME thought of the gig:

Hear'Say, STEPS, a1 and MEL B were among the acts who performed to 25,000 teenage fans at Glasgow's Bellahouston Park in the Irn Bru sponsored Live and Loud festival.
Sugababes, Dane Bowers and Damage also performed sets at the day-long event, dubbed "Teens in the Park", although Atomic Kitten were a no-show as Liz McLarnon had lost her voice at a previous gig.
It was left to local acts to open the proceedings: Claire Freeland, one of the 'Popstars' rejects on display, performed her new single 'Free', and Scottish boyband Right Now also got a good response from their home crowd, closing with their new single, a version of LeAnn Rimes' 'How Do I Live'.
Other local acts included fellow Scots 'Popstars' flop, Darius, who unlike many acts performed live, accompanied only by acoustic guitar for his single 'Mockingbird', which had an Eagle Eye Cherry feel to it. Darius also embarked on one of his traditional rants, saying: "Never let anyone say you're not good enough," and giving the impression he may have to be dragged off the stage.
Sugababes also elected for live action, unlike the piper who mimed along to Dario G's 'Carnival De Paris', and STEPS delivered a polished set, with the vocal parts all pre-recorded.
This was not the norm for the event, however, as Mel B and Damage also performed live. Likewise with a1's acapella performance. Hear'Say were the critics' choice, however, with their polished performance of 'Pure & Simple' and a cover of 'Boogie Wonderland' stealing the show.

FAYE: "I hope Bubble wins! He makes me laugh hysterically, he's just so funny."

POP'S BEST PA TIPS REVEALED

Ever fancied working with FAYE, H, LISA, LEE and CLAIRE? Well find out what it's like to from a man who does...

Alan, can you talk us through exactly what your job as STEPS' PA involves?
Basically, I am responsible for keeping the guys informed on what they are doing and where they need to be on a day to day basis, organising their schedules, travelling with them to personal appearances to make sure everything runs smoothly and on-time, and they have everything they need to get them through the day!

What's it like working so closely with a pop group as high profile as STEPS?
Hard Work!! I don't think most people realise how much preperation goes on behind the scenes, before you actually see them on the TV or on Stage. I am normally wherever we are on that day before any of the band, and will always be the last one to go home!

Why did you choose this line of work, did you always want to work in media?
I have loved music ever since I can remember, and decided even when I was still at school that I would be working in music one way or another, when I left after my exams. I never thought about any other career opportunities. I'm not saying that people shouldn't consider lots of avenues before deciding on what route to take, I just knew from the offset what I wanted to do with my life.
Is there a reason as to why you chose to work with pop music in particular? Why STEPS?
Pop music is my favourite style of music. I've probably got at least one single for every pop band that has been around for the last 10 years in my record collection! Working with Steps just happened! I started working for the management company after leaving my last job just helping out in the office, and was asked to start working with Steps a few months later.

Are there any downsides to your job?
I wouldn't call it a downside as such, but sometimes when you are out promoting a single for 3-4 weeks non-stop, you can get very tired!!! You can be working anything up to 15 hour days and you just want to sleep for a week when it's all over! It all makes it all seem worthwhile though when you see the single heading straight for the top of the charts!

What do you think is the BEST aspect of your job?
Getting to travel (sometimes abroad) with the band, and meeting lots of different people. I'm a people person, so it's always nice meet people from all walks of life.

Is there a moment that stands out when you've been proud to be doing what you are now?
It was on the Steps Into Xmas tour last year. The guys were playing at the MEN arena in Manchester, and those of you that have been there will know how huge the arena is! They had just started the show with Tragedy, and I was standing looking out at the audience from the side of the stage. All you could see was glowsticks for miles, and everyone singing along - I got goosebumps - Steps have the best fans!!! I always feel proud watching them perform on stage, and it makes my job seem all worthwhile.

You spend a lot of time around STEPS, what are they really like to work with?
Honestly? They are the best! They are probably the kindest and most fun, loving people I have ever worked for. At the end of the day I am there to do my job, but it feels like working with good friends. We spend a lot of time with each other, so it's important that we get on, and we do!

Do you have any long-term goals that tie in with your work, or that lead on from your current job?
At the moment - no. I am just happy to be doing what I'm doing now, and enjoying each day as it comes. Who knows what is around the corner?!

People often have the pre-conception that working with celebrities is all glamour and fun. Was this job what you expected it to be? How is it different to your initial expectations?
The job was everything I expected it to be and then some! It may seem like it's all glamour and parties, but in reality that couldn't be any further from the truth. It's a lot of hard work, long hours, and working your weekends when your friends are out having fun!

Finally, what would your one piece of advice be to anyone reading this that wants to become a PA?
If you're ready to work very hard, are very organised, can juggle 100 tasks at the same time, don't mind working at weekends, and can still manage to find time to call your mum and say hello, then maybe this is the right job for you!!

We'd like to send a big 'thank you' to STEPS on behalf of children everywhere' - NSPCC

The NSPCC Interview H:

What are STEPS up to at the moment?
Rehearsing for SMTV which I am presenting in the near future.

How did you get involved with the NSPCC?
The NSPCC contacted us and told us about the FULL STOP Campaign and how it is helping end cruelty to children. They asked if we would like to get involved and help raise awareness of the Campaign. We said 'Yes', because we believe it's a really important cause. As the FULL STOP slogan says, "Cruelty to children must stop. FULL STOP."

What do you think of the Full Stop Campaign?
It has created great awareness of such a good cause among the public. We think that the NSPCC does fantastic work and are glad to help.

What is the funniest thing you have ever done for charity?
Had a bath in baked beans and jelly when I was at school it was for Comic Relief.

Did you like school when you were younger, what was your favourite subject?
I loved art, I was very creative, but I didnt really like school in general.

Not famous, but I always wanted to be successful at whatever I did.

Who do you talk to when you're worried about something?
My family, (my brothers) and friends and my cats!

I suffered more verbal abuse than physical it did have a psychological effect on me.

Definitely. Claire and I have our own show and Im presenting SMTV for three weeks very soon !! Cant wait!

If you weren't popstars, what would you like to be?
Id definitely be very creative, maybe theatre/set design.

What's the worst and best thing about touring with the band?
Best thing is performing on stage, I get such a buzz. Worst thing is having to work hard when youre ill !!

Do you all get on, or do you sometimes argue?
Honestly, weve never had a major argument its all about listening to each others' views and compromising.

What's your favourite Steps song?
Youll be sorry (off our latest album Buzz.)

CHAIN REACTION LYRICS

As you all know by now, STEPS' next single, due to be released this September, is a cover of Chain Reaction. The song is actually written by the Gibb brothers, better known as the BeeGees who were of course responsible STEPS smash hit single, Tragedy, let's hope Chain Reaction does just as well!
Below are the lyrics so you can get learning them well in advance!

You took a mystery and made me want it
You got a pedestal and put me on it
You made me love you out of feeling nothing
Something that you do, oh

And I was there not dancin with anymore
You took a little then took me over
You set your mark on stealin my heart away
Cryin, tryin anything for you

Im in the middle of a chain reaction
You give me all the after midnight action
I want to get you where I can let you
Make all that love to me

Im on a journey for the inspiration
To anywhere and there aint no salvation
Need you to get me nearer to you
So you can set me free

We talk about love, love, love
We talk about love
We talk about love, love, love
We talk about love

You make me tremble when your hand goes lower
You taste a little then you swallow slower
Nature has a way of yielding treasure
Pleasure made for you, oh

You gotta plan, your future is on the run
Shine a light for the whole world over
You never find a love if you hide away
Cryin, dyin, all you gotta do is

Get in the middle of a chain reaction
You get a medal when youre lost in action
I wanna get your love all ready
For sweet sensation, instant radiation

You let me hold you for the first explosion
We get a picture of our love in motion
My arms will cover, my lips will smother you
No more left to say

We talk about love, love, love
We talk about love

Let me hold you for the first explosion
Arms will cover you
All you gotta do

Get in the middle of a chain reaction (A chain reaction)
You get a medal when youre lost in action (Dont pass me by)
I wanna get your love all ready (Share love with me)
Sweet sensation, instant radiation (Oh, oh)

You let me hold you for the first explosion (A first explosion)
We get a picture of our love in motion
My arms will cover, my lips will smother you
No more left to say (All you gotta do)

Get in the middle of a chain reaction (A chain reaction)
You get a medal when youre lost in action (Dont pass me by)
I wanna get your love all ready (Share love with me)
Sweet sensation, instant radiation (Oh, oh)

You let me hold you for the first explosion (First explosion)
We get a picture of our love in motion.

MAKE-UP WITH STEPS

The second part of the working with STEPS interview is with Jackie, the band's make-up artist:

Hi Jackie. Could you just tell us all what your job as Make-up Artist for STEPS involves?
My job involves making up Steps for all their media work, whether it is photos for Smash Hits or television programmes in Japan. I have to maintain their appearance, come up with new make-up ideas, give skin-care advice and make sure they look fantastic at all times.

What's it like working with artists as high profile as STEPS?
I have worked with many high profile bands but Steps are very special to me. They are a great bunch of people and have become good friends.
What's it like knowing that your job has played a part in making STEPS as popular as they are today?
I cant take any credit for the bands success. They did that all by themselves, with good management and hard work. I hope Ive made it easier for them to perform knowing they look their best.

How did you become a make-up artist for pop stars?
I always wanted to be a make-up artist but initially I worked in fashion companies. It was only fate that changed my direction when some of my favourite fashion photographers moved into the music business I went with them.

Do you have any more ambitions that lead on from your current work?
I still want to work in all areas of the music business with clients as diverse as Charlotte Church and Radiohead but pop music is the most fun, make-up wise. I met Steps while working for Sky magazine and we got on immediately. After that I worked with them whenever possible.

What's the worst aspect of your job?
I love my job but occasionally there are days that go on and on, usually video shoots, and it can be very tiring. I once had to work a complete day (24 hours!!) and then drive home.

... and what's the best aspect?
There are lots of best aspects to my job. Travel, meeting new people every day, playing with make-up and getting paid for it. Im very lucky.

Has there been a moment in your career that's made you feel really proud to be doing what you do?
I was very proud to be Steps make-up artist on the night they won their Brit award, I also thought they looked amazing that night.

While the band aren't here, what are they really like to work with?
Steps are fantastic to work with. The girls love make-up, like me, and we have fun trying out new colours and products. H and Lee dont need much attention from me but ensure there is never a dull moment backstage.

Do you think you'll always work in the music industry?
I tend to take each day as it comes right now. One day I would love to do make-up on a feature film - perhaps if Lee does a Hollywood movie in the future he could insist that I do the make-up.

What's the worst part of your job?
I love my job but occasionally there are days that go on and on, usually video shoots, and it can be very tiring. I once had to work a complete day (24 hours!!) and then drive home.

People always assume the music industry is all fun and glamour. How do you feel about this?
You really have to pick the right celebrities to have fun and glamour. Steps certainly fill that criteria but there are many artists and bands that dont. If you are unlucky it could be a very miserable job.

Lastly, can you offer some advice to any budding make-up artists that wish to break into the industry?
To become a make-up artist it is best to study make-up and hair if possible at college. Then its a good idea to try and assist an experienced make-up artist and learn the things college does not teach you, such as etiquette on a film set and how to behave when your celebrity throws a starry tantrum!!

STEPPY STUFF

We've recieved quite a few e-mails from STEPS fans in the US who are quite concerned that there doesn't seem to be much going on over there, in regards to publicity for the new album Buzz.
As we have mentioned before there will be a Teenick special next month(see diary for more details) and STEPS are actually starting to appear in a few small articles in teen magazines. But apart from that we don't really know what other promo the band have in mind at this stage. We will be in contact with Jive Records and will let you know of any more possible promo in the US.

On the magazine front two mags you might be interested in are Mystic Meg's Destiny Magazine in which H has his future told with some very interesting outcomes!
Plus there's a small feature in this weeks Bella with LISA choosing her fave beauty products for the summer.

STEPS HELP SEARCH FOR MISSING TEENAGER

STEPS are using their fame to help locate a missing teenager.
The UK five-piece - CLARE, LISA, FAYE, LEE and H - will be making an appeal to help police find missing 15-year-old Danielle Jones from East Tilbury in Essex.
The schoolgirl is a big fan of the band and it's hoped that the campaign will help jog the memory of someone who might have seen her, reports ananova.com. She has been missing for 11 days.
STEPS also made an appeal for missing eight-year-old Sarah Payne when she disappeared last year.
John Broughton, Assistant Chief Constable John Broughton, commented: "We are very grateful to STEPS for their support and we hope that their appeal will bring a response from Danielle or someone who knows of her whereabouts."

H AND LEE IN THE HOT SEAT

Now this isnt exactly a news story in the usual sense nothing particularly amazing has happened to H or Lee Steps but something is going to happen and its new to Smash Hits. Its also something we need your help with and we couldnt think of a better way of grabbing your attention.
Now that weve got it, we can explain what were up to. Regular readers of our fab mag will remember the infamous In The Sack which gave you the opportunity to send your questions direct to the stars. Well we binned it recently because we thought we could up with something more exciting and we have!
Taking our inspiration from Big Brother were introducing the Smash Hits Hot Seat (except that it may not be called that its so new we havent quite decided what to call it yet). What is definitely happening is that H and Lee will be sitting in a chair - Big Brother stylee and theyll have to answer all the questions that we ask them. They wont be our questions though theyll be yours.
Imagine forcing H and Lee to finally cough up the answer to the question that youve always wanted to ask them. Only the most original questions will be put to the guys so get youre thinking caps on. Were most interested in love, music, fears, embarrassments, childhood and fame but you might have other ideas.
Send your questions to help@smashhits.net and we really do need your help with this so dont let us down. If you want to share ideas why not make some suggestions in Pop Talk. What are you waiting for? Particularly as we need your questions before Monday!
(Smash Hits)
